Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Trippi had another excellent weekend –even by his own high standards.
Last season’s Champion Sire in South Africa, Trippi’s daughter Dawn Calling picked up a KZN Breeders Award, while his magnificent son Trip To Heaven impressed all when landing Saturday’s G2 The Citizen Merchants at Turffontein on Sansui Summer Cup day.

Trippi filly Dawn Calling, who was runner up in both the G1 Thekwini Stakes and G2 Gold Circle Golden Slipper last season, was named KZN Breeders’ Outstanding 2YO Filly for 2015-2016.

The oh-so consistent filly has won or placed in all nine of her career outings and has already banked over R360 000 in stakes. Dawn Calling will bid for more glory when she lines up in Saturday’s G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas at Kenilworth.

For a second week in a row, a son of Trippi was in the winners enclosure following a major graded feature.
Trippi (whose son Gold Standard won last weekend’s G2 Selangor Cup) is responsible for Trip To Heaven, who picked up his second G2 The Merchants when defeating a star studded field to land Saturday’s R450 000 feature by a neck. Amongst those defeated by Trip To Heaven in Saturday’s feature was last season’s Equus Champion Sprinter Talktothestars and multiple graded winner Kangaroo Jack (who had been seeking his sixth win in a row).

Trip To Heaven, bred by Highlands, had previously won the The Merchants back in 2014, and Saturday’s win (his sixth career win in total) pushed the gelding’s earnings to over R1.3 million. He is a G1 winner in all but name, having been controversially demoted from first place in last season’s G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge.

His sire Trippi, who has over 120 stakes horses to his credit, is enjoying yet another tremendous season with his runners having already amassed more than R4 million in prize money.
