Drakenstein Stud’s prominent young stallion What A Winter enjoyed a quick-fire double at Kenilworth on Tuesday.
The triple Equus Champion, and current Leading Second Crop Sire, was represented by his tenth two-year-old winner this season when his 2yo daughter Durty Nelly downed the regally bred Juniper Spring to shed her maiden over 1200m.
The Mike Robinson trained Durty Nelly prevailed in a thrilling three way finish, when running on strongly to score a short-head victory going away.
Making just her second racetrack appearance, the filly had been fourth to feature race contender Helen’s Ideal on debut, Durty Nelly was bred by Eclipse Racing And Breeding.
Out of the Royal Academy mare Whispering Academy, Durty Nelly was a R90 000 buy from the 2017 March Yearling Sale.
Her four time G1 winning sire What A Winter has been enjoying plenty of success with his juveniles this season with What A Winter’s other notable 2yo winners in 2017-2018 include the impressive G3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery winner Clouds Unfold and Kuda Sprint hero Agent Of Fortune.
What A Winter’s second winner on Tuesday came when his Candice Bass-Robinson trained son Cape Xtreme gained some reward for consistency when scoring over 2400m.
The Daytona Stud bred gelding, second at his last two outings, was trying the trip for a first time and won going away under the urgings of jockey Ryan Munger.
Another son of What A Winter, Dutch Philip, has been entered for the G1 Mercury Sprint at the end of the month.
A son of Western Winter (himself sire of this season’s G1 winners Attenborough and Redberry Lane), What A Winter will be represented by ten lots at August’s National Two Year Old Sale.
