80th STAKES WINNER FOR TRIPPI

4 January 2021

Drakenstein Stud’s champion sire Trippi came up with his 80th individual stakes winner when his lightly raced son Mombela captured the G3 Lebelo Sprint (1000m) at Turffontein on Sunday.

The Drakenstein Stud bred gelding ran on strongly down the inside of the track to claim the 2020 Lebelo Sprint (South Africa’s final graded race of 2020) by a head over recent Palacebet Home Of Winners Golden Loom Handicap winner Bold Ransom.

Nine-year-old Mombela, who was ridden by Lyle Hewitson, has now won five of 20 starts with the gelding’s previous notable efforts including a runner up finish in the G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap earlier this year.

Trained by Sean Tarry, Mombela was a R600 000 buy from the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Out of the Fort Wood mare National Banker, Mombela is bred on the same Trippi/Fort Wood cross as G1 winning sprinter Real Princess

South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, Trippi went close to enjoying a local feature race double this weekend with his talented son Constable finishing second in Saturday’s Listed Southeaster Sprint at Kenilworth.

Trippi has three lots on offer at the 2021 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, while his Selangor Cup winning son Gold Standard has seven first crop yearlings on offer at January’s Premier Sale.
