Drakenstein Stud’s top-class sire What A Winter looks to have a good sort to his name in the form of Romilly.
The latter made the perfect start to his racing career when he made a winning debut at Turffontein on Thursday.
Trained by Johan Janse Van Vuuren, two-year-old Romilly showed his class with a sterling performance in the #Youcanbetonus! Maiden Juvenile Plate (1200m).
Under Gavin Lerena, the gelded son of What A Winter was always prominent in running, and Romilly burst clear to win going away by just over two lengths.
Bred by Drakenstein Stud, Romilly races for Jarryd and Laurence Wernars in partnership with Rikesh Seewgoolam.
The gelding, who is out of the Trippi mare Clara Isabella, is the eighth two-year-old winner this season for What A Winter.
The latter has enjoyed another good season in 2024-2025, with What A Winter’s stakes winners this season headed by One Fine Winter, Asiye Phambili, and Winter Games.
A four time G1 winner and multiple Equus Champion, What A Winter has two daughters entered for the upcoming G1 Douglas Whyte Thekwini Stakes and two runners entered for the same day’s G1 Mercury Sprint.
