Drakenstein Stud’s increasingly successful sire, and former Horse Of The Year, Futura came up with a new stakes winner on Saturday.
Futura four-year-old Kubu caught the eye when she made the running to capture the Listed 4Racing Yellowwood Handicap (1800m) at TAB Turffontein.
Under a fine, front running ride from Richard Fourie, the Justin Snaith trained filly showed plenty of courage when fighting off runner up Tomyris to score by nearly half a length.
It was nearly three lengths further back to the third place finisher Into Dancing.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Kubu is owned by her breeder in partnership with Mr Jansen.
Kubu, who has won two of eight starts with a third place effort in last season’s Listed OTT Cape Fillies Classic a notable placing on her resume, is out of the Kahal mare Khonza. This makes her a full-sister to the talented, but ill-fated, Le Morne -who ran third in the 2022 G2 Cape Punters Cup.
She was one of two winners on Saturday for her four time G1 winning sire, with Futura gelding Rainwater victorious in Mauritius on the same day.
Futura, whose G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July winning son Note To Self was entered in the upcoming G3 Cape Mile, looks to have a smart three-year-old on his hands in the form of Rain In France. The latter followed up a fourth on debut with a near ten length maiden win and he looks one to watch.
