DURBANVILLE CUP JOY FOR FUTURA

8 March 2023

Drakenstein Stud’s red hot resident sire Futura claimed his second Listed win since Friday when his son Thefutureisbright won the Listed Durbanville Cup at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Tuesday afternoon.

The previous Friday had seen Futura filly Ekoria run out a facile winner of the Listed Breeders Guineas at Fairview.

Trained by Justin Snaith, four-year-old Thefutureisbright had finished third in the G3 Merchants On Long Chairman’s Cup last time out and built on that effort when claiming his first Listed victory on Tuesday.

Under JP Van Der Merwe, Thefutureisbright raced just off the pace early on, before being unleashed 300m from home.

He kept finding more in the closing stages to hold off a fast-finishing Master Redoute and score by just under half a length.

Bred by Ndoro Stud, Thefutureisbright has now won four of 18 starts for earnings of R389 200.

The gelding, who is out of the Western Winter mare Andermatt and is thus inbred to Western Winter, was an R100 000 buy from the 2020 National Yearling Sale.

Thefutureisbright was one of two winners at Durbanville for his four-time G1 winning sire, with Futura also the sire of progressive three-year-old Future Swing.

The latter made it three wins in a row when storming home to victory at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Tuesday.

Under Corne Orffer, Future Swing picked up the fourth win of his career when powering home in a thrilling finish to score by a short-head.

Bred by his part-owner Drakenstein Stud, Future Swing is out of the Trippi mare Carousel Swing and is thus bred on the same Futura/Trippi cross as graded stakes winners Pink Tourmaline and Vihaan’s Pie.
