FRIDAY TREBLE FOR WHAT A WINTER

17 April 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning stallion What A Winter continues to churn out winners all over South Africa and the champion son of Western Winter was at it again when What A Winter supplied a trio of winners at Fairview on Friday.

What A Winter’s high-class son Whatever Next made it win number five when he captured Friday’s Fairview Flying Five (Non-Black Type) over 1000 metres.
Under Greg Cheyne, the Alan Greeff trained three-year-old dug down deep in the closing stages to score by half a length, while accounting for some of the quickest gallopers in the Eastern Cape.

Bred by Alec Foster, the gelded Whatever Next had been one of the best of his generation at two in the Eastern Cape last season, with Whatever Next capturing three of five starts at two including both the Listed Dahlia Plate and Listed East Cape Nursery.

Runner up in last season’s Listed Champion Juvenile Cup, Whatever Next is out of the Captain Al mare Petala.

What A Winter also enjoyed success on Friday with his talented son You Know Who landing the TAB Telebet 0861 000 822 Derby Plate and daughter Glacier Gold capturing the Betontab.co.za Pinnacle Stakes over 1200 metres.

Bred by Ridgemont Highlands, the Alan Greeff trained Glacier Gold has now won her last three in a row, while her paternal half-brother You Know Who, who was bred by Drakenstein Stud, had finished third in the Listed East Cape Guineas, behind his paternal half-brother Safari Blue, at his previous start.

South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs, by stakes, last season, What A Winter is currently second on South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs List, by stakes, for 2021-2022.

The former sprint champion has an outstanding draft on offer at the upcoming National Yearling Sale, with What A Winter’s draft including a half-sister (Lot 34) to this season’s G3 Cape Classic winner Trip Of Fortune, a brother (Lot 191) to top-class sprinter Mr Cobbs, and a filly (Lot 408) out of champion Hammie’s Hooker.
