THREE IN A ROW FOR WHAT A WINTER

16 October 2023

Drakenstein Stud’s hugely successful resident sire What A Winter had another good weekend this week, with his weekend winners headed by the very progressive filly Asiye Phambili. The latter made it three wins on the bounce when she won at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

Trained by Duncan Howells, Asiye Phambili was always travelling strongly under Richard Fourie in Sunday’s Hollywood Foundation FM 98 Handicap (1600m), and hit the line nearly a length and three-quarters ahead of runner up Danse Milord.

A Cape campaign may now be on the cards for Asiye Phambili, who has now won five of 12 starts.

Bred by the Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, four-year-old Asiye Phambili is out of the Rambo Dancer mare Cast A Spell, making her a full-sister to G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship runner up Trickster.

Asiye Phambili was one of four winners over the past weekend for What A Winter, whose daughters Winter Greeting and Winter Cloud both impressed when winning at Turffontein and Hollywoodbets Durbanville respectively on Saturday. Classy filly Winter Greeting made it four wins from just six starts when she made all to win over 1200m on Saturday, while last season’s G3 City Of Cape Town Cape Of Good Hope Nursery/G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Winter Cloud made a winning seasonal debut when she won the eighth and final race at Durbanville on Saturday.

What A Winter, runner up on the South African General Sires List last season, has five lots on offer at Sunday’s Cape Racing Ready To Run Sale and a further six lots on the 2023 November Two Year Old Sale.
