The son of Western Winter had just four runners at Hollywoodbets Greyville, with son Love In Winter finishing second in race two. Another son, Chill In Winter, won the fourth race with What A Winter’s daughter Spirited Flight victorious in the following race.
What A Winter is also the sire of Swiss Paradise, who finished fourth, behind her paternal half-sister Spirited Flight, on Wednesday.
The progressive Chill In The Air got off the mark at the fourth time of asking when he won Wednesday’s Greyville Convention Centre Maiden Handicap in convincing style.
Stepping up to 1900 metres, the Michael Roberts trained colt was given a fine ride by Rachel Venniker. Venniker bought her mount with a strong late challenge, which saw Chill In The Air storm home to score by nearly two and a quarter lengths.
Bred by Drakenstein Stud, the three-year-old is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Lebombo Breeze.
The well bred Chill In The Air is a full-brother to the stakes placed You Know Who and half-brother to 2023 G2 Cape Punters Cup hero Hluhluwe.
What A Winter is also the sire of Spirited Flight, who ran out a courageous winner of the Soccer 13 FM 66 Handicap (1200m) on Wednesday. Trained by Mark Dixon, the five-year-old mare dug down deep to score by just over three parts of a length in Wednesday’s heat.
Bred by Dr Veronique Kritzinger, Spirited Flight was winning for a third time when scoring at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Out of the Fort Wood mare Pimpinella, Spirited Flight is bred on the same What A Winter/Fort Wood cross as stakes winners Humdinger, Glacier Gold and Fort Winter.
South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2019-2020, What A Winter’s four black type winners last season included G1 Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes winner Humdinger.
