Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning sire What A Winter has been firing on all cylinders of late, and the former Equus Champion came to the fore yet again at Fairview on Friday, when his son Whatever Next won the Listed East Cape Nursery (1200m) in convincing style.
One of two runners in the race for trainer Alan Greeff, the Alec Foster bred Whatever Next showed his class in Friday’s R85 000 contest for two-year-olds with a gutsy display.
Under Greg Cheyne, Whatever Next kept finding more in the closing stages and went on to score by half a length while clocking a time of 71.06 seconds.
Now a winner of two of just three starts, the What A Winter colt was a R100 000 buy from the 2020 CTS Ready To Run Sale.
Out of the Captain Al mare Petala, Whatever Next is one of ten South African two-year-old winners for What A Winter this season, with the sire also responsible for this season’s G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery runner up Winter Mosaic.
He is the second son of What A Winter to win the East Cape Nursery, with the sire’s Fort Winter having prevailed back in 2017.
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2016-2017, What A Winter is currently responsible for 30 black type horses including this season’s graded stakes winners Celestial Love and Winter Smoke.
