WHAT A WINTER FILLY LANDS MAGNOLIA GR3

1 December 2020

Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning resident stallion What A Winter continues to make his presence felt as a high-class sire, and the multiple Equus Champion enjoyed another big payday when his daughter Winter Smoke won the G3 World Sports Betting Magnolia Handicap (1160m) at Turffontein on Saturday.

Bred by Mr Fitzgerald, the Ashley Fortune trained 3yo flew out of the starting stalls and went out to make the running under Calvin Habib.

Despite facing strong challenges close to home, Winter Smoke kept finding more to claim the first graded stakes win of her career by three-parts of a length.

Fourth in last season’s G1 Allan Robertson Championship, the classy Winter Smoke has now won three of just six starts.

Out of the Cataloochee mare Chatanooga Chuchu, Winter Smoke was a R150 000 buy from the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

Her sire What A Winter enjoyed a magnificent season in 2019-2020 where his flagbearers included the G1 winners Clouds Unfold, Warrior’s Rest and Equus Champion Sprinter Russet Air.

He also made his mark at the recent Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale, where a What A Winter colt was knocked down to Bass Racing for R525 000.
